Grants

+ 2023-24 Firstmark Credit Union Foundation Grants

Building a College-Level Screen-Printing Program
I’m deeplyhonored to have been awarded grants from the Firstmark Credit Union Foundation not just once, but three separate times — a distinction that underscores both the strength of the proposals and my commitment to bringing real opportunities to my students.

What Firstmark Foundation Represents
The Firstmark Foundation is a nonprofit grant program that supports educators working directly with K–12 students, funding innovative projects and classroom enhancement initiatives. The grants are awarded without revealing the applicant’s name, school, or identity — judged solely on the merit of the project proposal. By receiving these grants, I gained access to essential funding to create a high-quality screen-printing studio within my classroom — something rarely available at the high school level.

How the Grants Transformed the Classroom Experience
First Grant: Professional Exposure Unit
The initial grant allowed me to purchase a professional exposure unit — a critical piece of equipment for screen printing. This upgrade enabled my students to accurately transfer designs onto screens, greatly improving reproducibility and design clarity. With this unit, our class moved beyond simple printmaking to a process more akin to college-level or professional studios.

Second Grant: Vacuum Printing Table
With the second grant, I added a vacuum table to our studio setup. The vacuum table ensures that screens lay perfectly flat during printing, which significantly improves print quality and consistency. This tool allowed students to produce cleaner, sharper prints, and better understand the technical side of printmaking — from registration to proper ink adhesion.

Third Grant: Washout Booth for Screen Cleaning
The most recent grant funded a washout booth — essential for safely and effectively cleaning screens after printing. This addition not only ensures a sustainable workflow but also teaches students the full lifecycle of screen printing: from concept to print to cleanup. The booth helps us maintain screens for reuse and fosters a sense of responsibility and care for equipment. Combined, these grants allowed me to build a fully functional, college-ready screen-printing lab inside the school — something few high school art departments offer.

More Than Just Equipment — Real Learning, Professional Skills, and Agency
The value of these grants extends beyond material upgrades. Because of this funding, my students gained hands-on experience with true printmaking workflows, including:
• Preparing screens, exposing designs, and registering prints
• Using professional printing tools and techniques (vacuum table, washout process)
• Managing aprint production workflow: design → printing → cleanup → reuse
• Project planning, resource management, and teamwork
• Understanding real-world art production rather than simplified classroom craft

Beyond technical skill, the grants also gave students a taste of what it means to run a working studio: a sense of responsibility, the value of quality, and the satisfaction of creating something tangible and professional.
What Beinga Three-Time Grantee Means to Me
Receiving three grants from Firstmark — especially under their blind-judged system — affirms that my proposals stood out based on clarity of vision, educational value, and student impact. It’s a powerful validation that the work I’m doing matters. It’s not just about art — it’s about building opportunities, equipping students with real skills, and opening doors to creative careers or advanced artistic study.

Gratitude & Continuing Forward
I’m deeplygrateful to Firstmark Credit Union Foundation and its members for believing in this vision and investing in arts education. With their support, I’ve been able to transform my classroom into a dynamic, professional-grade printmaking studio. I remain committed to using these resources to nurture student creativity, technical skill, and confidence — and to continue providing meaningful, real-world art experiences for the next generation of makers.”
