NOLA Brunch and Beignets Mural Project - San Antonio, TX

When NOLA Restaurant began designing its new space, the owners envisioned a statement piece that would immediately immerse guests in the spirit, flavor, and personality of Louisiana. I was commissioned to create a large-scale mural inspired by the Atchafalaya Basin—an iconic wetland rich with wildlife, culture, and unmistakable Southern charm.

About the Artwork

The mural reimagines the Atchafalaya as a vibrant, playful landscape that blends realism with whimsy. Anchored by towering Bald Cypress trees and sweeping bayou water, the composition features several beloved Louisiana species: an Ivory-billed Woodpecker, Roseate Spoonbill, Bachman’s Warbler, Great Egret, and an American Alligator. Each animal is rendered with careful anatomical detail and textured mark-making to honor the region’s ecological beauty.

But the magic of this mural lies in its joyful surprises. Each bird carries a fresh beignet in its beak—even the Great Egret, soaring above the treetops with its sweet prize. The alligator emerges from the water wearing a strand of Mardi Gras beads, adding a playful nod to New Orleans celebrations. A sunrise takes the shape of a sunny-side-up egg, and subtle, mischievous smiles on the animals hint at the delicious food served just steps away in the restaurant. The scene balances natural realism with lively, graphic outlines and layered textures, ensuring that every inch of the mural offers something new to discover.

My Role and Process

As the commissioned artist, I developed the project from concept sketch to final installation. My work included:

  • Researching and interpreting the Atchafalaya Basin to create an authentic yet inviting visual narrative.

  • Designing the full mural composition, incorporating wildlife, cultural elements, and lighthearted visual metaphors unique to NOLA’s character.

  • Scaling and transferring the artwork onto the restaurant’s large interior wall using projection and hand-drawn outlines.

  • Painting the mural by hand using high-quality house paints, fine detail brushes, and paint markers to achieve both durability and precision.

  • Applying a protective marine-grade sealant to ensure the artwork remains vibrant for many years.

  • Coordinating closely with the restaurant team to adapt to shifting timelines and ensure completion before opening day.

From start to finish, the goal was to create a piece that feels alive—something that invites guests into the warm, celebratory culture of Louisiana the moment they walk through the doors.

A Celebration of Place, Food, and Joy

The finished mural serves as both a visual anchor for the restaurant and a celebration of the playful, soulful energy of New Orleans. It honors the ecology of the bayou while also embracing the humor, flavor, and festivity that define the region.

This project was a joy to bring to life, and I’m honored to have contributed a lasting piece of art to the new NOLA Restaurant.
